According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Autism Spectrum disorder is a developmental disability that may cause significant social, communication and behavioral challenges. The current statistic of ASD is 1 in 59 with a higher rate seen in boys. Signs and symptoms of ASD can be seen as early as infancy or more commonly seen around the age of 2.
Currently, the cause of Autism remains unidentifiable. There are connections between paternal and maternal age however. Another connection involves genetics. There is a greater risk of Autism when one sibling has Autism already. Environment can play a role. For instance, certain infections and chemicals exposed during the prenatal period can be a suspected cause of Autism.
Some symptoms include but not limited to avoidance or limited eye contact, repetitive and restrictive patterns of behavior, delayed speech or regression of already acquired language and obsessive interests such as lining up toys.
There is no cure for Autism. However, with Applied Behavior Analysis and early diagnosis, quality of life can drastically improve.
